| 内容記述 | This essay offers a sociological inquiry about how the gendered, standard family model that continues to dominate Japanese society, along with its associated social norms, contributes to the growing realities and conflicts of "family complexity" in contemporary Japan. Historically, modern Japanese families have been defined by a rigid, standardised model that prescribes the roles of family members and their relationships. However, increasing individualisation within both family ad society has led to a greater plurality of family forms and idealised images of intimate relationships, As a result, contemporary Japan has witnessed rising rates of divorce, and non-legally defined relationships between couples and parents and children. Simultaneously, institutional support for such evolving family structures has been hampered. This essay examines the relationship between modern family norms and the modern state through the lens of the theory of "compressed modernity" in Asia and explores cross-national stepfamilies as a more radical model of diversified Japanese families. | |||||||
