Historically, modern Japanese families have been defined by a rigid, standardised model that prescribes the roles of family members and their relationships. However, increasing individualisation within both family ad society has led to a greater plurality of family forms and idealised images of intimate relationships, As a result, contemporary Japan has witnessed rising rates of divorce, and non-legally defined relationships between couples and parents and children. Simultaneously, institutional support for such evolving family structures has been hampered.
