Deeply moved by Miller’s writing, Ueno initiated a correspondence with Miller in 1965. This exchange of letters would grow into one of Miller’s last, great correspondences, continuing until his death in 1980. In total, the two men sent each other more than 400 letters, some reaching up to eight pages in length. Miller and Ueno’s transpacific friendship provided Miller a window into Japanese culture that was uniquely tailored to his interests and arose from Ueno’s intimate knowledge of Miller’s oeuvre.
